Laura Miller from NBC Universal visits ICB O’Hare Campus
On 7-29-2013, Laura Miller, NBC Universal Transmission Engineer met with the students at the Illinois Center for Broadcasting, O’Hare Campus.
Ms. Miller pointed out to the students that the broadcast/media industry is ever evolving, requiring constant education of new technology and being flexible enough to go with the changes.
Laura highly suggested that the students find internships that would allow them to get their “feet wet” and garner some great experience even if the opportunity might not be exactly what they initially wanted. The internships provided students an opportunity to network and work with others and sometimes that might require coming in on their own time in addition to the scheduled internship hours.
Ms. Miller strongly suggested that students dress for success, “dress- the- part that you want to be.” Laura suggested that students smile, introduce themselves and be assertive without being obtrusive and she noted the difference.
“You have to be a risk taker,” so that you can stand-out and be noticed. “You will make mistakes,” noted Laura, “but that’s okay providing you learn from your mistakes and move forward.” Ask the professionals if you can shadow them or watch them at work. Most professionals are flattered to have you take an interest in watching them do their best.
Last but not least, accept the assignments and the schedule without complaining and your attitude will be noticed and appreciated.
Laura Miller is a long-time NBC employee who oversees the transmission area at NBC5 Chicago, coordinating audio/video feeds, satellite and mini-cam incoming and outgoing signals as well as the transmission of the primary signal and output of WMAQ-TV.
