How to Dress for a TV Appearance
Preparing for your first on-camera experience can be exciting – and a bit daunting. There are so many details to think about, especially because you want to make the most of this opportunity.Â
Odds are, you are worried about how to act and what to say during your television appearance, but you might also be wondering what to wear on TV. To some, what to wear for a TV interview or appearance might not seem that important. But your outfit choice can actually make a big difference.Â
We have put together a quick and easy guide to help you figure out how to dress for TV so you look and feel your very best on-screen.
Dressing for a TV Appearance: What to Do
- DO wear solid colors in bold shades. Saturated tones (often called “jewel tones”) are universally complimentary and look great on-screen. Look for clothing pieces in shades such as emerald, amethyst, and sapphire blue.
- DO wear clothing that is tailored but not tight. Your clothing should fit well without any distracting lines, creases, or bagginess. You certainly don’t want to look like you have to squeeze into your outfit.Â
- DO highlight your personal style with simple details. Generally, you want to stick to simple, classic options when choosing outfits for TV. Anything too trendy can be a distraction. But that doesn’t mean you can’t express yourself – look for pieces that have small details for a decorative touch. For example, a ruffled cuff, peplum, or belt can be the perfect way to create an interesting but timeless look.
- DO wear the proper undergarments. Avoid embarrassing surprises by being mindful of your undergarments, especially if you are wearing thinner or unlined fabrics.
- DO wear makeup. There is nothing wrong with being confident in your natural appearance, but the HD camera and studio lights will make you look washed out if you aren’t prepared. With makeup, you can define your features and still look like yourself.
- DO use hair spray and a lint brush. Lint and stray hairs will be painfully obvious in high-definition, so be sure you have a lint brush and hairspray ready.Â
Dressing for a TV Appearance: What Not to Do
- DON’T dress in black and white. Even though it might seem like black and white would be fail-proof colors, they look unpleasantly harsh on camera.
- DON’T wear busy patterns, and avoid narrow stripes above all. Not only can busy patterns distract the eye, but some distort on camera.
- DON’T wear oversized jewelry. Simple jewelry is always best for a classic, understated look, but there are also practical reasons to keep your larger baubles at home. The sensitive TV microphones can easily pick up the jingling of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, so smaller is better.
- DON’T try to dress overly trendy. You might love to try out the latest fad styles, but when you are on television, you don’t want your fashion to be the main focus. Modern yet simple is key. Dramatic styles often look silly on camera, even if they are beautiful in person.Â
Other Tips for Dressing for a TV Appearance
Here are a few extra tips to help you dress your best for TV:
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions. You can always ask your point person if they have suggestions regarding wardrobe or details they can share about the setting, interview format, and other situations.
- Bring a backup option. It is best to be prepared! Having a backup outfit can be your saving grace in the event of an accidental spill or rip.
