The Beonair Network and The Ohio Media School are very proud of our roots in providing ambitious students with the knowledge necessary to help them pursue a career in broadcasting.Meet Ryan Lang a 2006 graduate of Ohio Media School. Ryan attended the Ohio Media School (then, Ohio Center for Broadcasting) in 2006. While attending OMS, Ryan interned for WTAM 1100 and was hired as a Traffic Reporter and Board Operator before graduating from OMS.After two years at WTAM, Ryan was hired by 970 WFLA in Tampa, Florida as a News Anchor and Web Content Coordinator. He spent 4 years in Tampa, recording news for 13 different Florida markets, before moving back to Cleveland and back to WTAM as a News Anchor. At that time, Ryan also joined OMS as an Admissions Rep.In June of 2016, Ryan was hired by the Rubber City Radio Group as the Morning News Anchor for 1590 WAKR in Akron and has since taken on the role of Morning News Anchor for Scott and Sarah in the Morning on 94.9 WQMX and The Jeff Kinzbach Morning Show with Sandra Miller on 97.5, while still anchoring the news on 1590 WAKR middays. Over his career, Ryan has covered two Republican National Conventions, a World Series, an NCAA Tourney, and much much more.

Ryan noted of his experience at OMS/ OCB, “I’ve been fortunate enough to experience the Ohio Media School from several perspectives; student, teacher, administrator, and advisory board member, and the one thing that has persisted over the course of my 17-year involvement with the school is that the student and the student’s success are the top priority. I’ve witnessed firsthand that OMS faculty and staff go above and beyond to help even just one individual student further their career. There is an understanding at the school that people are there to better their lives doing something that they love, and so much of that has to do with the industry professionals that students are learning from. So many of these folks have been in the same seats, literally and figuratively, as the students, and they know what it takes to be successful in the media, and that is why they fight for the students.”

Ryan’s advice to our aspiring media students is to ” to show up early, apply for the job (even if you think you aren’t qualified or experienced enough), go after what you want, never give up on your dream, and never stop working on getting better. There is always room for improvement.”

Very recently, we learned that Ryan will be hosting his own show! “I’m beyond excited for the next phase of my career, but I can’t put into words how much I’m going to miss working with [WQMX morning hosts Scott Wynn and Sarah Kay] – two of the best this business has to offer, and two of my best friends,” shares Lang via Facebook. Ryan exits his role as a news anchor for Rubber City Radio country WQMX Akron, OH (94.9) to step into middays at classic-rock sister WONE (97.5). Lang, who joined Rubber City in 2016, also has provided morning news updates for WONE and hosted weekends there.

Please tune in and join us in wishing Ryan all the best!

Students at our Cleveland Campus of Ohio Media School producing their TV Show- “Talk of the Land” as part of their collaborative class project for the Network Simulation part of their RTB202: TV News Reporting & Production course.

In this course, students learn how to gather, tape and edit news in field situations. Students learn and practice techniques in TV interviewing and “backpacking,” and students use this instruction to produce a 30-second news report. The course includes hands-on application projects, like the one noted above where students put together a collaborative 30-minute television news, sports, and weather program. Students write, produce and act as talent for the production. Students are taught performing techniques, floor-directing techniques, crew placement, camera angles, and lighting techniques.

“Learn by Doing” is the School’s style. We know that there is no substitute for operating the tools of broadcasting under the direction of broadcast professionals. The classes and studio sessions are run with the same professional informality that is found throughout the broadcast industry

Our CMS students had a chance to ease many frustrations when it comes to editing. We all want to be perfect. we are #grateful to our guest speaker Devin taught us about The Unattainable Triangle. It’s the age-old golden rule, you can either have it fast, cheap or good, but you can’t have it all. This is referred to as the “unattainable triangle in marketing and advertising.”Devin noted this of his experience…
“I was asked to speak at Colorado Media School yesterday, and I was blown away by how well I was received by the students. It was so cool being able to share my little bit of knowledge with some up-and-coming talented people. Seeing that sparkle in their eyes brought me back to my beginnings and made me so grateful for how far I’ve come. The faculty actually asked me to become an instructor I really wish I could because it’s inspiring to see people with so much potential and passion!!!!”

“Former collegiate athlete, passionate about spreading awareness on social issues, and having those difficult conversations.” Crystal Corr, Graduate of Illinois Media SchoolWith a bachelor’s degree in Communication, it was Crystal Corr’s Guidance Counselor at Concordia University Chicago who encouraged her to enroll at Illinois Media School so that she would gain hands-on training and acquire the technical skills needed to advance her career goals. In addition to classroom and studio time on campus, Crystal also gained industry experience through internships available through Career Services and Education. Her passion for the camera grew in her first internship experience as a videographer with D Stone Live and she gained additional training with Urban Grind TV. It would be through her internship at The Walt Disney Company’s ABC 7 Chicago, that she gained tremendous industry growth. Crystal was thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside two of her favorite TV personalities at ABC7, Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini, and to assist the Creative Content, Programming, and Promotions Departments.Crystal graduated from Illinois Media School and focused on TV, but it was the thick of the pandemic, and landing a good career start proved to be difficult. To make ends meet, she accepted a full-time Nanny role but never lost sight of her media career goals.

Completing her contract, Crystal redirected her focus to On-Air radio. Recently hired as Assistant Producer at Audacy, Inc. News Radio WBBM-AM, Crystal is thrilled. Working alongside former Illinois Media School classmate and mentor, the very talented Dalal Orfali, Crystal is finding everyone very helpful and the job a great career start. WBBM Afternoon Traffic Anchor and Instructor at Illinois Media School, Neil Fiorito is an amazing advocate for our graduates and both Crystal and Dalal continue to be mentored by this industry veteran, who is also an Illinois Media School (formally Illinois Center for Broadcasting) alumnus.

Crystal’s advice to current students is, “Build relationships and learn from your instructors who are professionals in the industry. They are also great references, so show them who you are and what you can do!”

Very grateful to her Illinois Media School instructors which included On-Air Host Davante Stone and Emmy Nominated TV Host and Hollywood Entertainment Senior Contributor at Forbes, Jeff Conway, Crystal took advantage of every opportunity to learn from a pro to be a pro!

“Give yourself the chance to believe in what you can do” -Justin RodriguezMeet Justin Rodriguez, a recent graduate of Ohio Media School Cincinnati Campus. Justin has been hired as a Promotions Assistant at Radio One and is very excited about his career start. Engaged and motivated to be at the top of his game, Justin could not have anticipated this opportunity when he first enrolled at Ohio Media School.Justin chose to enroll at Ohio Media School because he had just left a job and he really wanted to make a change for himself by learning the skills that would help him find success. He credits Ohio Media School with assisting him to achieve those goals. Justin will tell you that the hands-on training by instructors who are themselves professionals in the industry, taught him to get over his fears of large crowds, being the center of attention as well as the anxiety of sending emails and making phone calls. He feels that the positive reinforcement from staff and instructors helped him to grow tremendously, and provide the confidence needed to launch his career.Knowing how difficult it can be when English is your second language, Justin is also determined to provide a voice to the Latino community. He will continue to use the skills he has acquired to assist him in accomplishing this goal. His own background of overcoming the language barrier when he came to the US, drives him to help others in a similar situation. Giving people a voice is Justin’s passion.

In addition, Justin found he had a natural talent and love for the camera and editing. As a live-streaming gamer, he is putting those skills to work and is enjoying the opportunity to record his interactions and build a connection with his gaming community, as well.

Justin’s advice to current students is, “Give yourself the chance to believe in what you can do even though it may seem the position you are seeking is of your reach.  Go after it anyway because you never know what will happen once you get started.”

Please join the Beonair Network of Media Schools, which includes Ohio Media School, in congratulating Justin and wishing him continued success! Confident and talented, Justin Rodriguez is following his dreams to reality

We invite you to connect with our emerging media professionals. Please Inbox local Career Services Director Phillip Bufford to learn more about our programs and graduates. Together, let’s create opportunities and fill your hiring needs!

Holidays are no time to slow your job search!

You might think the holidays mean a slowdown in hiring, but the truth is employers hire when they need new employees! Many people slow their job search during the holidays, which translates into less competition and more opportunities for you! With fewer candidates vying for specific jobs, you may land an amazing opportunity that you never dreamed would come your way. Keep organized and track responses to avoid missing an email or text.
This is also a great time of year to network. Industry mixers and local community events are excellent times to mix and mingle, offer your card, and have your brand pitch up to par.
2023 budgets are in place, and companies are ready to hire. You may be able to negotiate a later start date or choose to get started and enjoy the added income with a quick start.
Most importantly, stay focused and don’t assume that because it’s the holiday, you should take time off from your job search. Just the opposite! Dig in and make your future happen!OK, one day off for Thanksgiving! And then back to work on the job search. Land that job and celebrate!

Best,
Lynda

Through his news outlet, Matthew is able to highlight the things happening in and around Oberlin, and just hosted their first annual chili cook-off!  Additionally, Matthew recently launched a new podcast, called Tuck n Tuck Show, which focuses on the people. Hosted by brothers Caleb Tuck and Ahmad Tuck.

His guests so far have included:

OMS-Cleveland  Visits Cleveland Gaming Classic

Ohio Media School Career Services Director Houda Crable took a peak inside this year’s Cleveland Gaming Classic, exploring the many ways our students and graduates can pursue their passion, both in internship and employment.

While attending, Houda was happy to catch up with former Ohio Media School Instructor representing Hyland, the very talented Jeffrey Ford and Employer partner at Rock The House, Director of Entertainment Cory Enriquez, who was DJing the event!

It is incredible to note that the Cleveland Gaming Classic started more than a decade ago, with eight friends playing a Tecmo Bowl Tournament in someone’s basement. It has grown into a weekend convention drawing gamers from at least ten states to the IX Center in Northeast Ohio.

OMS- Columbus Invited to Employer VIP Event for Mahogany Media Group (MMG)

Houda’s counterpart at our Columbus Campus, Lee. A Wagner, Regional Director of Career Services also had a very busy week connecting with media industry employers. Lee had great campus visits including a VIP Event for the sponsors of Mahogany Media Group (MMG). MMG is launching the Mahogany brand in all major cities, Mahogany Columbus, Mahogany Atlanta, and Mahogany New York to name just a few and conveniently they are based here in Columbus. The group approached Lee to hire some of our graduates for various media positions including videographers, media sales, and content creators for their magazine. We are excited about the opportunities available for our prepared media graduates.

OMS-Cincinnati Partners with Ohio Kings ABA Pro Basketball, On Impact Recruiting and African American Chamber of Commerce to Provide Opportunities for Students and Graduates Alike.

The Cincinnati Campus (Ohio Media School) has been busy!  We have a new director of Career Services in Phillip Bufford.  He has been busy meeting companies and key businesses in the city.  We have partnered with Dante Payne of On Impact Recruiting, who are responsible for the HBCU Experience Event this Thanksgiving Weekend with special celebrity appearances by DJ Unk and Yo-Yo while major basketball games happen.  Ohio Media School students will be interning and capturing media content for all the events.

OMS- Cincinnati has partnered with the Ohio Kings, Cincinnati’s ABA Pro Basketball Organization. The team is co-owned by Team President Kevin L. Aldridge, who, BTW, is also an Alumnus of Ohio Media School! The team hired their first media correspondent in OMS graduate Brittany Brown.  She will cover all their home games with interviews and on-camera updates.

Finally, we have partnered with the African American Chamber of Commerce.  This chamber reaches over 10,000 businesses in the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan area as well as Northern Kentucky.   They surveyed all of their businesses, and the #1 need was media/marketing.  We have the talent, and they have the need.  The African American Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic regarding this new relationship with the Cincinnati Campus of Ohio Media School.
