How Passion & Education Shaped Aaron’s Dream Career
Aaron Shelan’s story is proof that passion, perseverance, and hands-on training can turn dreams into tangible success. A 2019 graduate from the Chicago Suburbs (O’Hare/Lombard) campus, Aaron has carved a niche for himself as the Play-by-Play Broadcaster for the Chicago Dogs.
Why IMS?
Aaron chose IMS with a vision—to immediately gain hands-on experience in media.
“3 days into my core classes, I was behind the mic calling college baseball games,” Aaron recalls.
He credits IMS with creating an environment where mistakes were not only expected but embraced as part of the learning process.
“The instant feedback from instructors allowed me to make corrections during games, enabling me to improve in real-time.”
This supportive approach shaped Aaron’s professional philosophy. He continues to apply what he learned, maintaining a positive mindset and treating mistakes as opportunities for growth.
Making an Impact in the Industry
Today, Aaron is living his dream career as the voice of the Chicago Dogs, calling 105 out of 105 games during the 2024 season. His fifth year with the team and second full season in the primary broadcaster seat are milestones he cherishes deeply. Aaron has also built a thriving network with IMS alumni, describing his coworkers—including Timmy Helms, Mike Arcaro, Darius Jefferson, and others—as not just collaborators but friends.
“A win for one of us is a win for all of us,” he shares about the camaraderie within IMS alumni circles.
Beyond baseball, Aaron spends his off-seasons freelancing as a broadcaster for local colleges and events like the Northern Illinois Hockey League. His ultimate goal? To secure a full-time position with either a college team or a minor league hockey organization.
Words of Wisdom for Future Broadcasters
Aaron offers invaluable advice for media students and recent graduates:
- “Cast a Wide Net”: Reach out to every college, team, station, or network that aligns with your passion.
- “Make Yourself Known”: Be visible and seize every opportunity to show your skills.
- “Show Up”: Aaron famously earned his current role by simply showing up at Chicago Dogs games. By staying persistent and building relationships with the team, he proved his commitment and talent.
A Lifelong Passion
Aaron’s fascination with broadcasting began when he was just 8 years old, and today, nearly 50 years young, he’s living the life he dreamed of. But his success didn’t come overnight. From his early days at the student radio station at the University of New Hampshire to returning to school at IMS in 2017, Aaron’s long and winding path underscores the importance of dedication and grit.
Married for nearly 20 years, he balances his career with family life alongside his wife Jenny and their four children.
“Being a Boston sports fan and watching my kids chase their passions are my favorite ways to unwind,” Aaron shares.
Join the Legacy
Aaron’s story is a testament to how the right education and unwavering determination can propel anyone toward their dream. For those with aspirations in sports broadcasting or media, he serves as an inspiration to jump in, make mistakes, learn fast, and always show up.
