Michael Manuszak – Robotics Operator WCIU-TV Visits ICB
Michael Manuszak visited ICB students on Wed. August 21, 2013 to discuss his career development at a Robotics Camera Operator for WCIU-TV 26 morning program, “You & Me This Morning” featuring Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman.
Most of the students did not know what a robotic camera operator does. Mike not only explained how he is expected to run several cameras at one time using a touch screen with pre-set shots but as an effective communicator, he used a video he produced to show students what his job actually entails and requires from him everyday.
Mike noted that waking up at 3:30 to make it to the studio is tough but it has its advantages. Mike is usually done by 12:30 p.m. and is free to pursue other activities throughout the course of the rest of his day.
Mike loves his job because he believes he’s learning and garnering experience that will lead to possibly a chance to become a director and/or continue progressing in his career as a freelance camera operator. Mike also shared with the students some of the fun moments he’s had working on “You & Me This Morning.” He loves the crew members he’s working with and the atmosphere of working on a broadcast that has influence and impact on the community he lives in – Chicago.
Mike’s schedule allows him an opportunity to work a second part-time job and is hopeful that he can do more freelance camera work – not only possible robotic applications for sports coverage but also producing wedding videos, commercials and corporate videos.
A number of ICB students asked Mike for his card and the opportunity to possibly connect with him as a mentor and also shadow his work on the show in the near future. Mike was open to helping ICB students anyway he could to help them realize their dream of getting a career in broadcasting. Following Mike’s appearance, he created with photos shot on location in La Salle classroom the following shout out which WCIU-TV’s Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman shared with the audience regarding Mike’s presentation at ICB.
